Augustana wins First Dakota National Bank Mayor’s Cup Challenge for fifth straight year

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana University has secured the First Dakota National Bank Mayor’s Cup Challenge for the fifth straight season. The Vikings won the 2016-17 Mayor’s Cup Challenge defeating the University of Sioux Falls 12.5-6.5.

The First Dakota National Bank Mayor’s Cup Challenge began in 2012-13 and Augustana has won the head-to-head competition every season. The Vikings won 13-6 in its inaugural season in 2012-13 before winning 14-15 in 2013-14, 11.5-7.5 in 2014-15 and 14.5-3.5 last season.

“The First Dakota National Bank Mayor’s Cup Challenge allows Augustana and USSF to showcase and promote our programs in head-to-head competition, academic achievement and community engagement,” Augustana director of athletics Slade Larscheid said. “On behalf of Viking athletics, I want to congratulate our student-athletes and coaches for another successful year and once again capturing the Mayor’s Cup. I would also like to thank our fans for supporting this partnership.”

The First Dakota National Bank Mayor’s Cup Challenge tracks head-to-head competition in 17 common, equally weighted sports with each victory earning points towards the overall series. The series also recognizes academic success and community engagement. In 2016-17, Augustana and USF collected new pairs of socks during competitions between the two schools. Augustana fans donated over 600 pairs of socks which were donated to Samaritan’s Feet, helping the Vikings earn a point in the community service portion of this year’s Mayor’s Cup Challenge.

By placing equal emphasis on all sports, the series helps to build community awareness for less publicized Olympic sports. The series focuses on the message that “Every Game Counts” and that the rivalry between the two schools is a year-long affair.

In 2016-17, Augustana won head-to-head competitions over USF in volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s indoor track and field, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball and women’s outdoor track and field. Augustana earned half a point in men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball as all three teams split the season series’.

Augustana will announce plans for a trophy presentation at a later date.
